Το όνομα σημαίνει «λιβάδι με τα λουλούδια», και τον Μεσαίωνα αυτό ακριβώς ήταν: ένα λιβάδι στη μέση της πόλης. Αργότερα έγινε πλατεία, και δύο φορές την εβδομάδα, Δευτέρα και Σάββατο, γινόταν εδώ παζάρι αλόγων. Από το 1869 κάθε πρωί στήνεται η λαϊκή αγορά, που μετακόμισε εδώ από την Piazza Navona: πάγκοι με ντομάτες, αγκινάρες, φρούτα, τυριά, μπαχαρικά σε σωρούς και ψάρια. Είναι το καλύτερο μέρος στη Ρώμη για να δεις τι τρώει η πόλη. Είναι επίσης η μόνη μεγάλη πλατεία του κέντρου που δεν έχει εκκλησία. Campo de’ Fiori — The “field of flowers” that became the city’s market
The name means “field of flowers”, and in the Middle Ages that is exactly what it was: a meadow in the middle of the city. Later it became a square, and twice a week, on Mondays and Saturdays, a horse market was held here. Since 1869 the food market has set up every morning, having moved here from Piazza Navona: stalls of tomatoes, artichokes, fruit, cheese, heaps of spices and fish. It is the best place in Rome to see what the city eats. It is also the only big square in the centre without a church. In the middle stands a dark, hooded statue: Giordano Bruno, a philosopher who believed the universe was endless and that there were other suns with planets of their own. In 1600 he was burned at the stake on this spot, because the Church considered his ideas dangerous. The statue was put up in 1889, when Rome decided to remember him: the words beneath say “here, where the fire burned”. In the morning the square smells of fruit, in the evening it fills with people, and Bruno looks towards the Vatican.
