Η παλιά Λευκωσία είναι χαμηλή. Σπίτια ενός και δύο ορόφων, στέγες, αυλές, σοκάκια. Και μετά, στη μέση της οδού Λήδρας, στέκεται ένα κτίριο έντεκα ορόφων. Ολοκληρώθηκε το 1959 και το έχτισε ο Κώστας Μαγκλής, οπότε στην αρχή το έλεγαν Πύργο Μαγκλή· μέσα στέγαζε γραφεία μιας μεταλλευτικής εταιρείας. Για δεκαεννιά χρόνια, μέχρι το 1978, ήταν το ψηλότερο κτίριο ολόκληρης της Κύπρου. Σήμερα οι κάτω όροφοι είναι κατάστημα ρούχων, αλλά ο ενδέκατος είναι κάτι άλλο: ένα παρατηρητήριο με τηλεσκόπια και κιάλια. Από εκεί πάνω η πόλη γίνεται χάρτης. Βλέπεις τον κύκλο των τειχών, τους μιναρέδες, τους τρούλους, τις ταράτσες, το νότιο και το βόρειο κομμάτι μαζί, και πέρα από όλα αυτά τα βουνά. Είναι ο γρηγορότερος τρόπος να καταλάβεις τη Λευκωσία: μία ματιά από ψηλά αξίζει όσο μία ώρα περπάτημα.

The Shacolas Tower — Eleven floors in a city of two-storey houses
Old Nicosia is low. One- and two-storey houses, roofs, courtyards, lanes. And then, halfway along Ledra Street, an eleven-storey building stands up out of it. It was completed in 1959 and built by Costas Manglis, so at first it was called the Manglis Tower; inside it held the offices of a mining company. For nineteen years, until 1978, it was the tallest building in all of Cyprus. Today the lower floors are a clothes shop, but the eleventh is something else: an observatory with telescopes and binoculars. From up there the city turns into a map. You see the circle of the walls, the minarets, the domes, the flat roofs, the southern and the northern part together, and beyond all of it the mountains. It is the quickest way to understand Nicosia: one look from above is worth an hour of walking.
