Σε μια πλαγιά απέναντι από ένα πάρκο στέκεται μια σειρά από επτά ξύλινα σπίτια, χτισμένα όλα μαζί στη δεκαετία του 1890 από τον ίδιο κατασκευαστή, ολόιδια μεταξύ τους: ίδια σκαλιά, ίδια παράθυρα, ίδια στολίδια στις προσόψεις. Αυτό που τα κάνει διάσημα είναι τα χρώματα. Τα σπίτια αυτού του τύπου, τα βικτωριανά, βάφονταν αρχικά σε σκούρα, βαρετά χρώματα. The Painted Ladies — Seven identical wooden houses, each painted differently
On a slope facing a park stands a row of seven wooden houses, all built together in the 1890s by the same builder, identical to each other: the same steps, the same windows, the same carved decoration on the fronts. What makes them famous is the colours. Houses of this kind, Victorian ones, were originally painted in dark, dull colours. In the 1960s a movement of painters in San Francisco began repainting them in three, four and five colours each, picking out every carving separately. They called them "painted ladies". Today whole neighbourhoods of the city look like this, but these seven are the most photographed, because from the park opposite you see them with the downtown skyscrapers rising behind: the old and the new in one picture. More than twenty-eight thousand such houses were built in the city, and many survived the earthquake because wood bends instead of breaking.
