Στα σκαλιά ενός λευκού μαρμάρινου κτιρίου κάθονται δύο λιοντάρια, το ένα δεξιά και το άλλο αριστερά. Λέγονται Υπομονή και Θάρρος: ένας δήμαρχος τους έδωσε αυτά τα ονόματα σε δύσκολα χρόνια, για να θυμίζουν στους κατοίκους τι χρειάζονται. Πίσω τους είναι μία από τις μεγαλύτερες βιβλιοθήκες του κόσμου, που άνοιξε το 1911 και είναι δωρεάν για όλους. Έχει εκατομμύρια βιβλία, τα περισσότερα φυλαγμένα σε ράφια κάτω από το πάρκο δίπλα, και ένα σύστημα από μικρά τρενάκια που τα φέρνει στους αναγνώστες. Η μεγάλη αίθουσα ανάγνωσης είναι μακριά σαν τρία γήπεδα μπάσκετ, με ξύλινα τραπέζια, πράσινες λάμπες και ένα ταβάνι ζωγραφισμένο με σύννεφα. The New York Public Library — Two marble lions guard millions of books
On the steps of a white marble building sit two lions, one on the right and one on the left. They are called Patience and Fortitude: a mayor gave them those names in hard times, to remind people what they needed. Behind them is one of the largest libraries in the world, which opened in 1911 and is free for everyone. It has millions of books, most kept on shelves under the park next door, and a system of little trains that brings them up to the readers. The great reading room is as long as three basketball courts, with wooden tables, green lamps and a ceiling painted with clouds. Among its treasures: one of the first printed books in the world and the real stuffed animals of a boy that became the heroes of the Winnie-the-Pooh books. Dozens of films have been shot in the library.
