Στη δυτική πλευρά του Μανχάταν, πάνω από τον ποταμό Χάντσον, υπάρχει ένα πάρκο που δεν πατάει στη γη. Στέκεται πάνω σε εκατόν τριάντα δύο τεράστια τσιμεντένια «ποτήρια», σαν τουλίπες πάνω σε κοτσάνια που βγαίνουν από το νερό, όλα σε διαφορετικό ύψος. Άνοιξε το 2021, στη θέση μιας παλιάς προβλήτας που είχε χαλάσει σε μια καταιγίδα. Πάνω του υπάρχουν λόφοι, μονοπάτια, τριακόσια πενήντα είδη φυτών, ένα μικρό θέατρο με θέα στο ποτάμι και σημεία όπου κάθεσαι με τα πόδια κρεμασμένα πάνω από το νερό. Δίπλα του ξεκινάει το Χάι Λάιν, ένα άλλο παράξενο πάρκο: μια παλιά σιδηροδρομική γραμμή που περνούσε ψηλά ανάμεσα στα κτίρια, εγκαταλείφθηκε, φύτρωσαν χορτάρια στις ράγες της, και αντί να τη γκρεμίσουν, η πόλη τη μετέτρεψε σε περίπατο δύο χιλιομέτρων πάνω από τους δρόμους. Little Island — A park standing on the river on concrete tulips
On the west side of Manhattan, above the Hudson River, there is a park that does not stand on the ground. It rests on a hundred and thirty-two enormous concrete "cups", like tulips on stalks rising out of the water, all at different heights. It opened in 2021, on the site of an old pier that had been wrecked in a storm. On top there are hills, paths, three hundred and fifty kinds of plant, a small theatre looking out over the river and spots where you sit with your feet dangling above the water. Next to it begins the High Line, another odd park: an old railway line that ran high up between the buildings, was abandoned, grew weeds on its tracks, and instead of pulling it down, the city turned it into a two-kilometre walk above the streets. Both are free.
