Ο μεγαλύτερος σιδηροδρομικός σταθμός του κόσμου, με σαράντα τέσσερις αποβάθρες, άνοιξε το 1913 και μοιάζει περισσότερο με παλάτι παρά με σταθμό. Η κεντρική του αίθουσα είναι τεράστια, με ψηλά παράθυρα από όπου μπαίνει ο ήλιος σε λοξές δέσμες, ένα χρυσό ρολόι με τέσσερις όψεις στη μέση, και ένα ταβάνι σε βαθύ πράσινο-μπλε ζωγραφισμένο με τα αστέρια και τους αστερισμούς. Grand Central Terminal — A station with the sky painted backwards on its ceiling
The largest railway station in the world, with forty-four platforms, opened in 1913 and looks more like a palace than a station. Its main hall is enormous, with tall windows through which the sun comes in slanting beams, a golden four-faced clock in the middle, and a ceiling of deep green-blue painted with the stars and the constellations. The ceiling has a mistake: the constellations are backwards, as if seen from outside, from space, and not from the Earth. Some say the painter got it wrong, others that it was on purpose, like a god’s-eye view. In one corner of the ceiling a small dark square has been left: it shows how dirty the whole ceiling was from cigarette smoke before it was cleaned. Downstairs, in front of the oyster restaurant, there is a "whispering corner": if you whisper into one wall of the arch, your friend hears you at the opposite one. Beside the station rises the Chrysler Building, a silver skyscraper with a top like a crown.
