The Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) — Pyramids of cinnamon, pepper and saffron in an L-shaped hall
This market was built between 1660 and 1664 together with the New Mosque next door, and it was paid for with taxes from Egypt, then a land of the Ottoman Empire. That is why it is still called the Egyptian Bazaar: Mısır is Turkish for Egypt. It was ordered by Turhan Sultan, the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV, and the rents of its shops paid for the upkeep of the mosque. The mosque itself had been started in 1597 by another sultan’s mother, Safiye, and had stood half-built for sixty years until a great fire burned the neighbourhood and everything was rebuilt at once. The building has two long arms that meet at a corner, like the letter L, with six gates and a row of small domes along the roof. For centuries, ships from Egypt and India unloaded sacks here of pepper, cinnamon, cloves and saffron, the most expensive spice in the world, which is the three red threads of a purple crocus. Today its 85 stalls still pile spices into pyramids of red, yellow and orange, beside towers of lokum. Outside, in the square, hundreds of pigeons wait for the seed that is sold in little cups.
