The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan) — A forest of 336 columns under the street
Fifty-two steps below the pavement, 150 metres from Hagia Sophia, there is a hall 138 metres long and 65 wide. Justinian had it built in the 6th century to store water for the palace: about 80,000 cubic metres, brought by aqueducts from a forest 19 kilometres to the north. The roof rests on 336 marble columns, 9 metres tall, in 12 rows of 28, most of them taken from older buildings. Then the city forgot about it. In 1545 a French traveller, Petrus Gyllius, discovered that people were still drawing water from below their houses; he was rowed between the columns and saw fish swimming under the oars. Between 1985 and 1987, 50,000 tons of mud were carried out, wooden walkways went in, and it opened to visitors. In the far corner two columns stand on carved heads of Medusa, the monster of Greek myth whose gaze turned people to stone: one upside down, one on its side. Nobody knows which building they came from. In 1963 a James Bond film was shot here, with the heroes rowing exactly where you are walking.
