Όταν η Σεβίλλη έγινε το λιμάνι από όπου έφευγαν τα πλοία για την Αμερική, γέμισε εμπόρους. Στην αρχή έκαναν τις δουλειές τους στα σκαλιά του καθεδρικού, και όταν έβρεχε έμπαιναν μέσα στην εκκλησία, πράγμα που θύμωνε τους ιερείς. Γι’ αυτό, στα τέλη του 16ου αιώνα, χτίστηκε δίπλα αυτό το τετράγωνο κτίριο, για να έχουν οι έμποροι το δικό τους μέρος. Διακόσια χρόνια αργότερα ο βασιλιάς αποφάσισε να μαζέψει εδώ όλα τα έγγραφα για τις ισπανικές χώρες της Αμερικής και των Φιλιππίνων. Έτσι έγινε το Αρχείο των Ινδιών: δεκάδες χιλιάδες φάκελοι, με εκατομμύρια σελίδες. Υπάρχουν χάρτες, σχέδια πόλεων και πλοίων, και γράμματα με την υπογραφή του Κολόμβου και του Μαγγελάνου. Οι ερευνητές έρχονται από όλο τον κόσμο για να τα διαβάσουν, και μερικά εκτίθενται στις μεγάλες αίθουσες.

The Archive of the Indies — Millions of pages about the voyages to America
When Seville became the port from which ships left for America, it filled up with merchants. At first they did their business on the steps of the cathedral, and when it rained they went inside the church, which annoyed the priests. So at the end of the 16th century this square building was put up next door, to give the merchants a place of their own. Two hundred years later the king decided to gather here all the documents about Spain’s lands in America and the Philippines. That is how it became the Archive of the Indies: tens of thousands of files, with millions of pages. There are maps, plans of towns and ships, and letters signed by Columbus and Magellan. Researchers come from all over the world to read them, and some are displayed in the great halls.
