Το 1865 το Πόρτο έχτισε ένα παλάτι από σίδερο και γυαλί, σαν γιγάντιο θερμοκήπιο, για μια μεγάλη έκθεση όπου οι χώρες έδειχναν τις εφευρέσεις και τις τέχνες τους. Γύρω του, ένας Γερμανός σχεδιαστής κήπων, ο Εμίλ Νταβίντ, φύτεψε δέντρα, έστησε σιντριβάνια και έστρωσε μονοπάτια στον λόφο πάνω από το ποτάμι. Το γυάλινο παλάτι όμως πάλιωσε και το 1951 κατεδαφίστηκε· στη θέση του σηκώθηκε ένα τεράστιο στρογγυλό κτίριο με θόλο, που σήμερα φέρει το όνομα της Ρόζα Μότα, μιας μαραθωνοδρόμου από το Πόρτο που κέρδισε ολυμπιακό χρυσό. Οι κήποι όμως έμειναν, και μαζί τους τα παγώνια, που περπατούν στα μονοπάτια σαν να τους ανήκει ο τόπος και ανοίγουν την ουρά τους όποτε τους καπνίσει. Πήγαινε ως την άκρη του λόφου: από εκεί βλέπεις τον Δούρο να φεύγει ίσια προς τον Ατλαντικό.

The Gardens of the Palácio de Cristal — Peacocks, trees, and a palace that is no longer there
In 1865 Porto built a palace out of iron and glass, like a giant greenhouse, for a great exhibition where countries showed off their inventions and their crafts. Around it a German garden designer, Émile David, planted trees, set up fountains and laid paths across the hill above the river. The glass palace grew old, though, and in 1951 it was pulled down; in its place rose an enormous round building with a dome, which today carries the name of Rosa Mota, a marathon runner from Porto who won Olympic gold. The gardens stayed, and so did the peacocks, who walk the paths as though they own the place and fan out their tails whenever they feel like it. Go to the edge of the hill: from there you can watch the Douro head straight out to the Atlantic.
