Ο υπουργός του βασιλιά, ο Μαρκήσιος του Pombal, δεν ξαναέφτιαξε τα παλιά στενά σοκάκια: χάραξε ολοκαίνουργιους ίσιους δρόμους και έχτισε αυτή την τεράστια πλατεία με τις κίτρινες στοές, ανοιχτή από τη μία μεριά στο ποτάμι, για να δέχεται καράβια και εμπόρους από όλον τον κόσμο. Ο βασιλιάς πάνω στο άλογο είναι ο José I, που βασίλευε τότε. Κατέβα ως το νερό και θα βρεις δύο πέτρινες κολόνες και μαρμάρινα σκαλιά που μπαίνουν μέσα στο ποτάμι: εκεί έδεναν οι βάρκες και από εκεί ανέβαιναν οι επίσημοι επισκέπτες στην πόλη. Όταν κάτι σπάει, μπορεί να ξαναχτιστεί, καμιά φορά και καλύτερο.

Praça do Comércio — The palace stood here, until the morning of the earthquake
Right here, beside the water, stood the palace of the kings of Portugal. On the morning of 1 November 1755 a terrible earthquake shook Lisbon, and the palace was lost along with most of the city centre. The people did not give up. The king’s minister, the Marquis of Pombal, did not put the old tangled lanes back: he drew brand-new straight streets and built this enormous square with its yellow arcades, open on one side to the river, so that ships and merchants from all over the world could arrive at it. The king on the horse is José I, who ruled at the time. Walk down to the water and you will find two stone columns and marble steps going into the river: boats tied up there, and important visitors climbed those steps into the city. When something breaks, it can be built again, and sometimes built better.
- People still call it Terreiro do Paço, “the Palace Ground”, though the palace was lost in the earthquake of 1755.
