The Rua Augusta Arch — A “well done” in stone that arrived a hundred years late
This arch was planned straight after the earthquake, as a gateway that shouts: “Look, Lisbon is standing again!” Only the building of it went very slowly. Plans changed, kings changed, and the arch was finished in 1875, more than a century after the day it was promised. High on top, a marble lady called Glory lays crowns on two figures, Genius and Valour: cleverness and courage, exactly the two things the city needed to get back up. Lower down, between the columns, stand carved people who really lived, such as the navigator Vasco da Gama and the Marquis of Pombal. Underneath it begins the Rua Augusta, the busiest walking street in town. And since 2013 a lift has carried visitors up to its roof, to look down on the straight streets Pombal drew.
