St Florian’s Gate — The one gate of eight that was never pulled down
Around 1300 Kraków wrapped itself in a wall with dozens of towers and eight gates. This is the gate that is left. The other seven came down in the nineteenth century, when the city decided the walls were choking it and swapped them for a green ring of trees, the Planty park. St Florian’s Gate escaped because a professor insisted that without it a cold draught would blow straight into town. The argument was funny and it worked. The gate is over thirty metres high, and the Royal Road starts here, the route the kings rode up to the castle. On the side facing the city there is a stone eagle, designed by the painter Jan Matejko, who was born a few steps away. And on the old wall beside it, every day, painters hang their pictures up for sale: the wall turned into a gallery.
