Μετά ο Pierre Cuypers, ο αρχιτέκτονας του Rijksmuseum, σχεδίασε έναν σταθμό που μοιάζει με παλάτι από κόκκινο τούβλο, με σκαλίσματα, χρωματιστές εικόνες και δύο πύργους. Ο ανατολικός πύργος έχει ρολόι. Ο δυτικός έχει έναν δίσκο που δεν δείχνει καθόλου την ώρα: ένα πτερύγιο στη στέγη γυρίζει με τον άνεμο και κινεί τον δείκτη, ώστε οι ναυτικοί, και όλοι οι άλλοι, να διαβάζουν από πού φυσάει. Πολλοί κάτοικοι γκρίνιαξαν ότι το κτίριο τούς έκρυψε τη θέα στα καράβια. Amsterdam Centraal — A palace of red brick standing on the water
Before 1889 there was open water here: the IJ, the harbour of the city. To build a railway station, the engineers first had to build the ground. They made three artificial islands and drove 8,687 wooden piles into the mud, down to the firm sand underneath, because anything heavy in Amsterdam sinks unless it stands on piles. Then Pierre Cuypers, the architect of the Rijksmuseum, designed a station that looks like a palace of red brick, with carvings, coloured pictures and two towers. The eastern tower has a clock. The western one has a dial that does not show the time at all: a vane on the roof turns with the wind and moves the pointer, so that sailors, and everyone else, could read which way the wind was blowing. Many people grumbled that the building hid their view of the ships. Today almost 200,000 travellers pass through every day, free ferries leave from behind it for the north bank, and in 2023 a garage for almost 7,000 bicycles opened in front of it, built under the water.
