Artis — The oldest zoo in the Netherlands, in the middle of the city
In 1838 three friends who loved animals, Gerard Westerman, J.W.H. Werlemann and J.J. Wijsmuller, founded a society called Natura Artis Magistra, Latin for “Nature is the teacher of art”. Everyone shortened it to Artis. It is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and the fifth oldest in the world still open, and it never moved: the city grew around it, so today lions, giraffes and elephants live a short walk from the canals. Some 900 species live here. Many of the buildings are older than your great-great-grandparents: the aquarium opened in 1882, and 27 old buildings, bridges and ponds on the grounds are protected monuments, most of them now homes for animals. There is a planetarium by the entrance, and since 2014 a museum called Micropia, the first in the world about the creatures too small to see: bacteria, moulds and the microbes that live on your own skin. About 1.3 million people visit every year. Give the aquarium time; it is the oldest room in the zoo.
