Ο μεγάλος αδελφός χτίστηκε στα τέλη του 15ου αιώνα και είναι το πιο παλιό πέτρινο σπίτι κατοικίας που σώζεται στη Ρίγα. Οι εκκλησίες της πόλης είναι πιο παλιές, όμως αυτό ήταν σπίτι ανθρώπων. Έχει αέτωμα σαν σκάλα, με σκαλοπάτια ψηλά στη στέγη. Ο μεσαίος είναι του 1646. Ο μικρός είναι ο πιο στενός και ο πιο νέος, χτισμένος γύρω στο 1700. Μέσα δουλεύει το Μουσείο Αρχιτεκτονικής της Λετονίας. Τον χειμώνα 2026–27 είναι ανοιχτό μόνο τις καθημερινές και κλειστό Σάββατο και Κυριακή, με εκθέσεις που αλλάζουν και χωρίς μόνιμη έκθεση. Για τις μέρες των Χριστουγέννων δεν είχε ανακοινωθεί τίποτα, οπότε έλεγξε πριν πας. Το 2020 η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή τους έδωσε το Σήμα Ευρωπαϊκής Κληρονομιάς. The Three Brothers — Three houses side by side, each from another age
On Mazā Pils iela, Small Castle Street, three houses stand shoulder to shoulder, like brothers posing for a photograph. They are called the Three Brothers. Three brothers did not build them: the name is a nickname, because they stand together and are different sizes. The eldest brother was built at the end of the 15th century and is the oldest surviving stone house that people lived in anywhere in Riga. The city’s churches are older, but this was a home. It has a gable like a staircase, with steps high up on its roof. The middle one dates from 1646. The youngest is the narrowest and the newest, built around 1700. So within a few metres you can see how merchants’ houses changed in the towns around the Baltic Sea. The houses were repaired in the 1950s. The Latvian Museum of Architecture works inside. In winter 2026–27 it is open on weekdays only and closed on Saturdays and Sundays, with changing exhibitions and no permanent display. Its Christmas days were not announced, so check before you go. In 2020 the European Commission gave them the European Heritage Label. When you get there, count the steps on the eldest brother’s gable.
