The National Library of Latvia — A glass mountain full of books, across the river
Across from the Old Town, on the left, western bank of the river Daugava, rises a building of glass and steel shaped like a mountain. This is the National Library of Latvia. Latvians call it Gaismas pils, the Castle of Light. The name comes from an old Latvian poem that became a song: a castle of light sank long ago, and one day it will rise again. The building’s shape also recalls the glass mountain of Latvian fairy tales. It was designed by Gunnar Birkerts, an architect who was born in Latvia and worked in America. The library was founded in 1919, but its new home opened on 29 August 2014. On 18 January 2014 something happened that the city does not forget. About 14,000 people stood in one long human chain, from the old library to the new one, across the river, in the winter cold. They passed books from hand to hand until they reached the new shelves. Inside the building is the People’s Bookshelf: books given by ordinary people, each with a personal message written inside. From the library’s bank, look north-east: across the water you can see the towers of the Old Town. In winter 2026–27 the library is closed on Sundays and on public holidays, such as 24–26 and 31 December and 1 January.
