Η Βενετία κόβεται στα δύο από το Μεγάλο Κανάλι, ένα φαρδύ νερένιο δρόμο σε σχήμα ανάποδου S. Για πάρα πολλά χρόνια υπήρχε μόνο μία γέφυρα για να το περάσεις με τα πόδια, εδώ, στο Ριάλτο, την καρδιά του εμπορίου. Στην αρχή ήταν ξύλινη, και στη μέση άνοιγε για να περνάνε τα ψηλά καράβια. Οι ξύλινες γέφυρες όμως σάπιζαν ή κατέρρεαν, και μία έσπασε κάτω από το βάρος του κόσμου που μαζεύτηκε να δει μια παρέλαση με βάρκες. Τελικά η πόλη αποφάσισε να χτίσει μια γέφυρα από πέτρα, που τελείωσε το 1591. Πολλοί πίστευαν ότι μια τόσο μεγάλη καμάρα θα έπεφτε, αλλά στέκεται ακόμα. Πάνω της υπάρχουν δύο σειρές μαγαζιά, και από την κορυφή βλέπεις τις βάρκες, τα βαπορέτα και τις γόνδολες να περνάνε από κάτω.

The Rialto Bridge — For centuries the only way to walk across the Grand Canal
Venice is cut in two by the Grand Canal, a wide waterway shaped like a backwards S. For a very long time there was only one bridge where you could cross it on foot, here at the Rialto, the heart of trade. At first it was made of wood, and the middle opened up to let tall ships through. But wooden bridges rotted or gave way, and one broke under the weight of the crowd that had gathered to watch a parade of boats. In the end the city decided to build a bridge of stone, which was finished in 1591. Many people thought such a big arch would fall down, but it still stands. There are two rows of shops on it, and from the top you can watch the boats, water buses and gondolas passing underneath.
