Πριν από τριακόσια χρόνια η πλαγιά ανάμεσα στην πλατεία και στη γαλλική εκκλησία της κορυφής ήταν ένας λασπωμένος λόφος. Ένας Γάλλος διπλωμάτης, ο Étienne Gueffier, πέθανε το 1660 και άφησε ένα μέρος της περιουσίας του για μια σκάλα. Χρειάστηκαν δεκαετίες για να συμφωνήσουν όλοι, και τελικά οι αρχιτέκτονες Francesco de Sanctis και Alessandro Specchi έχτισαν 135 σκαλιά που ανεβαίνουν με καμπύλες, πλατύσκαλα και στροφές, σαν παγωμένος καταρράκτης. Ο θρύλος λέει ότι μια πλημμύρα του Τίβερη είχε αφήσει εδώ μια αληθινή βάρκα. Την άνοιξη τα σκαλιά γεμίζουν γλάστρες με ροζ αζαλέες. Στο σπίτι δεξιά της σκάλας έζησε και πέθανε το 1821 ο Άγγλος ποιητής John Keats· σήμερα είναι μουσείο. Από το 2019 απαγορεύεται να κάθεσαι στα σκαλιά, για να μη φθείρεται το μάρμαρο.

The Spanish Steps — 135 steps pouring from a church down to a boat
Three hundred years ago the slope between the square and the French church at the top was a muddy hillside. A French diplomat, Étienne Gueffier, died in 1660 and left part of his fortune for a staircase. It took decades for everyone to agree, and in the end the architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi built 135 steps that climb in curves, landings and turns, like a frozen waterfall. It opened in 1725. The steps are called “Spanish” because the Spanish embassy has stood on the square below for centuries; the staircase itself, though, was paid for by the French. At its feet is a fountain shaped like a sinking boat, the Barcaccia, from 1627 to 1629, the work of Pietro Bernini, father of Rome’s most famous sculptor. Legend says a flood of the Tiber had left a real boat stranded here. In spring the steps fill with pots of pink azaleas. In the house to the right of the steps the English poet John Keats lived and died in 1821; today it is a museum. Since 2019 sitting on the steps has been forbidden, to protect the marble.
