Αυτή η πλατεία είναι μακρόστενη και στρογγυλεμένη στη μία άκρη, γιατί έχει ακριβώς το σχήμα ενός σταδίου. Ο αυτοκράτορας Δομιτιανός το έχτισε γύρω στο 86 μ.Χ. για αγώνες δρόμου και πάλης, όπως στην Ολυμπία, και χωρούσε περίπου 30.000 θεατές. Οι αγώνες λέγονταν agones, από την ελληνική λέξη «αγώνας», και από εκεί με τους αιώνες βγήκε το όνομα Navona. Όταν το στάδιο γκρεμίστηκε, τα σπίτια χτίστηκαν πάνω στις κερκίδες και ο στίβος έμεινε άδειος, σαν πλατεία. Το 1651 ο Gian Lorenzo Bernini έστησε στη μέση το Σιντριβάνι των Τεσσάρων Ποταμών: τέσσερις μαρμάρινοι γίγαντες είναι τα μεγάλα ποτάμια των τεσσάρων ηπείρων που ήξεραν τότε, ο Νείλος, ο Γάγγης, ο Δούναβης και ο Ρίο ντε λα Πλάτα, και από πάνω τους υψώνεται ένας οβελίσκος. Ο Νείλος κρύβει το πρόσωπό του με ένα πανί, γιατί τότε κανείς δεν ήξερε πού είναι οι πηγές του. Απέναντι στέκεται η εκκλησία της Αγίας Αγνής, που την έχτισε ο Borromini, ο μεγάλος αντίπαλος του Bernini. Από το 1652 ως το 1866, κάθε Σαββατοκύριακο του Αυγούστου έκλειναν τις αποχετεύσεις και η πλατεία γινόταν μια ρηχή λίμνη για να δροσίζονται οι Ρωμαίοι.

Piazza Navona — An ancient stadium turned into a square with three fountains
This square is long and narrow with one rounded end, because it has exactly the shape of a stadium. The emperor Domitian built it around AD 86 for running and wrestling contests, as at Olympia, and it held about 30,000 spectators. The contests were called agones, from the Greek word for contest, and over the centuries that word turned into the name Navona. When the stadium crumbled, houses were built on top of the seating and the track was left empty, as a square. In 1651 Gian Lorenzo Bernini set the Fountain of the Four Rivers in the middle: four marble giants are the great rivers of the four continents known at the time, the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the Río de la Plata, with an obelisk rising above them. The Nile hides his face under a cloth, because nobody then knew where his source was. Opposite stands the church of Saint Agnes, built by Borromini, Bernini’s great rival. From 1652 to 1866, every weekend in August the drains were blocked and the square became a shallow lake for Romans to cool off in.
