Το όνομα είναι ελληνικό, «πάντων των θεών», γιατί ο ναός ήταν αφιερωμένος σε όλους τους θεούς μαζί. Τον πρώτο τον έχτισε ο Αγρίππας στα χρόνια του Αυγούστου· το κτίριο που βλέπεις είναι του αυτοκράτορα Αδριανού, γύρω στο 126 μ.Χ., που άφησε στην πρόσοψη το όνομα του Αγρίππα και όχι το δικό του. Οι δεκαέξι κολόνες της εισόδου είναι από γρανίτη της Αιγύπτου, η καθεμιά ένα μονοκόμματο κομμάτι 11,9 μέτρων και 60 τόνων, που ταξίδεψε με πλοίο. Μέσα, ο θόλος έχει διάμετρο 43,3 μέτρα και ακριβώς το ίδιο ύψος, οπότε μια τεράστια μπάλα θα χωρούσε ακριβώς. Είναι ακόμα ο μεγαλύτερος θόλος από σκυρόδεμα χωρίς σίδερο στον κόσμο. Οι μηχανικοί τον έκαναν 6,4 μέτρα χοντρό στη βάση και μόνο 1,2 στην κορυφή, με ελαφρόπετρα ψηλά για να μη βαραίνει. Στο κέντρο του ανοίγει ένα μάτι χωρίς τζάμι: από εκεί μπαίνει ο ήλιος σαν προβολέας, και όταν βρέχει, η βροχή πέφτει στο πάτωμα, που έχει κλίση και τρύπες για να φεύγει το νερό. Το 609 ο ναός έγινε εκκλησία, και γι’ αυτό δεν του πήραν ποτέ τις πέτρες. Εδώ είναι θαμμένος ο ζωγράφος Ραφαήλ.

The Pantheon — A two-thousand-year-old dome with an eye open to the sky
The name is Greek, “of all the gods”, because the temple was dedicated to every god at once. The first one was built by Agrippa in the time of Augustus; the building you see is the emperor Hadrian’s, from around AD 126, and he left Agrippa’s name on the front instead of his own. The sixteen columns of the porch are Egyptian granite, each a single piece 11.9 metres tall and 60 tonnes heavy, that came by ship. Inside, the dome is 43.3 metres across and exactly as tall, so a giant ball would fit inside it perfectly. It is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. The engineers made it 6.4 metres thick at the base and only 1.2 at the top, with pumice up high to keep it light. In the centre opens an eye with no glass: sunlight comes through it like a spotlight, and when it rains, the rain falls on a floor that slopes and has holes to carry the water away. In 609 the temple became a church, which is why nobody ever took its stones. The painter Raphael is buried here.
