Μέσα στο μεγάλο πάρκο της Villa Borghese, στα βόρεια του κέντρου, άνοιξε στις 5 Ιανουαρίου 1911 ο ζωολογικός κήπος της Ρώμης. Τον σχεδίασε ο Γερμανός Carl Hagenbeck, που είχε μια ιδέα καινούργια για την εποχή του: αντί για κλουβιά με κάγκελα, τα ζώα θα ζούσαν σε ανοιχτούς χώρους με πράσινο, χωρισμένους από τους επισκέπτες με τάφρους και χαντάκια, ώστε να τα βλέπεις χωρίς σίδερα ανάμεσα. Στην αρχή ο κήπος είχε δώδεκα εκτάρια· σήμερα έχει δεκαεπτά, και φιλοξενεί περίπου 1.100 ζώα από 222 είδη: θηλαστικά, ερπετά και πουλιά. Το 1935 ο αρχιτέκτονας Raffaele De Vico, ο ίδιος που έφτιαξε τον Κήπο με τις Πορτοκαλιές, έχτισε εδώ ένα σπίτι για τα ερπετά, που έκλεισε το 1970 και ξανάνοιξε ανακαινισμένο το 1983. Το 1998 ο κήπος άλλαξε όνομα και σκοπό: έγινε Bioparco, και η δουλειά του δεν είναι πια να δείχνει σπάνια ζώα αλλά να τα προστατεύει και να μαθαίνει στα παιδιά γιατί χρειάζονται προστασία. The Bioparco — The zoo that swapped bars for moats
Inside the great park of the Villa Borghese, north of the centre, the Rome zoo opened on 5 January 1911. It was designed by the German Carl Hagenbeck, who had an idea that was new for his time: instead of cages with bars, the animals would live in open, green spaces separated from the visitors by moats and ditches, so that you saw them with no iron in between. At first the zoo covered twelve hectares; today it has seventeen, and is home to about 1,100 animals of 222 species: mammals, reptiles and birds. In 1935 the architect Raffaele De Vico, the same man who made the Orange Garden, built a reptile house here, which closed in 1970 and reopened after renovation in 1983. In 1998 the zoo changed its name and its purpose: it became the Bioparco, and its job is no longer to show off rare animals but to protect them and to teach children why they need protecting. You will meet elephants, lions, chimpanzees, white rhinos and African penguins, a stroll away from Livia’s painted garden.
