Πριν από περισσότερα από εκατόν είκοσι χρόνια οι αγορές της Βουδαπέστης γίνονταν στους δρόμους, μέσα στη λάσπη και τη σκόνη. Η πόλη αποφάσισε να τις μαζέψει κάτω από μία στέγη, και ο αρχιτέκτονας Samu Pecz σχεδίασε ένα κτίριο με σιδερένιο σκελετό, πολύ ψηλό και γεμάτο φως, που μοιάζει περισσότερο με σιδηροδρομικό σταθμό παρά με μαγαζί. Λίγο πριν από τα εγκαίνια μια φωτιά κατέστρεψε τη στέγη, όμως την επισκεύασαν και η αγορά άνοιξε το 1897. Κάτω από το κτίριο περνούσε κανάλι: τα καράβια έμπαιναν από τον Δούναβη και ξεφόρτωναν μέσα στην αγορά, κάτι που σήμερα δεν γίνεται πια. Στο ισόγειο κρέμονται αρμαθιές από κόκκινες πιπεριές για πάπρικα, τη σκόνη που δίνει γεύση σχεδόν σε κάθε ουγγρικό φαγητό. Οι πιπεριές ήρθαν από την Αμερική πριν από πεντακόσια χρόνια και έγιναν η γεύση αυτής της χώρας. Στον επάνω όροφο μυρίζει lángos, τηγανητή ζύμη με σκόρδο και τυρί.

The Great Market Hall — An iron railway station full of red peppers
More than a hundred and twenty years ago the markets of Budapest were held in the streets, in the mud and the dust. The city decided to gather them under one roof, and the architect Samu Pecz designed a building with an iron skeleton, very tall and full of light, that looks more like a railway station than a shop. Shortly before the opening a fire wrecked the roof, but it was repaired and the market opened in 1897. A canal ran under the building: boats came in from the Danube and unloaded inside the market, which no longer happens today. On the ground floor hang strings of red peppers for paprika, the powder that flavours almost every Hungarian dish. The peppers came from America five hundred years ago and became the taste of this country. Upstairs the whole floor smells of lángos, fried dough with garlic and cheese.
