Στη γωνία των οδών Λεωνίδου και Θεμιστοκλέους, στο ιστορικό κέντρο της Βέροιας, στέκεται ένα μικρό τετράγωνο κτίριο με τρούλο και μιναρέ. Είναι το Ορτά Τζαμί. Τζαμί λέγεται ο χώρος όπου προσεύχονται οι μουσουλμάνοι. «Ορτά» στα τουρκικά σημαίνει «κεντρικό», από τη θέση του μέσα στην πόλη. Χτίστηκε γύρω στο 1490. Το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού το λέει ένα από τα πιο παλιά οθωμανικά μνημεία της Βέροιας και ένα από τα πρώιμα τζαμιά που σώζονται στην Ελλάδα. Έχει ένα μόνο δωμάτιο, σκεπασμένο με τρούλο, δηλαδή μια στρογγυλή σκεπή σαν μισή μπάλα, και μια στοά σε δύο πλευρές. Τον 17ο αιώνα ο Οθωμανός ταξιδιώτης Εβλιγιά Τσελεμπή θαύμασε τον τρούλο του, που ήταν σκεπασμένος με μολύβι. Σήμερα δεν είναι χώρος προσευχής. Η Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων το αναστήλωσε: επισκεύασε τον τρούλο, τα ανοίγματα, το πάτωμα, τις ζωγραφιές και τον μιναρέ. Άνοιξε για τους επισκέπτες στις 2 Σεπτεμβρίου 2026, μαζί με τα Δίδυμα Λουτρά, και θα φιλοξενεί πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις. Είναι 141 μέτρα νότια-νοτιοδυτικά από την Παλαιά Μητρόπολη.

The Orta Mosque — A small domed mosque in the middle of the old town
On the corner of Leonidou and Themistokleous streets, in the historic centre of Veria, stands a small square building with a dome and a minaret. It is the Orta Mosque. A mosque is the place where Muslims pray. “Orta” is Turkish for “central”, after its place in the town. It was built around 1490. The Ministry of Culture calls it one of the oldest Ottoman monuments of Veria and one of the early mosques that survive in Greece. It has a single room covered by a dome, a round roof like half a ball, and a porch on two sides. In the 17th century the Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi admired its dome, which was covered in lead. Today it is not a place of prayer. The Ephorate of Antiquities restored it, mending the dome, the openings, the floor, the paintings and the minaret. It opened to visitors on 2 September 2026, together with the Twin Baths, and it will host cultural events. It is 141 metres south-south-west of the Old Metropolis.
