Τον 6ο αιώνα π.Χ. η αρχαία πόλη της Σάμου χρειαζόταν καθαρό νερό. Η πηγή ήταν στην άλλη πλευρά ενός βουνού, κι έτσι οι Σάμιοι αποφάσισαν να σκάψουν ένα πέρασμα μέσα από το βουνό. Γι’ αυτό λέγεται «όρυγμα»: κάτι που το έσκαψαν. Ο μηχανικός ήταν ο Ευπαλίνος, γιος του Ναυστρόφου, από την πόλη Μέγαρα. Το όρυγμα έχει μήκος 1.036 μέτρα, λίγο πάνω από ένα χιλιόμετρο, και στα περισσότερα σημεία ύψος και πλάτος περίπου 1,80 μέτρα. Δύο ομάδες τεχνιτών της πέτρας έσκαβαν ταυτόχρονα, μία από τον βορρά και μία από τον νότο, μόνο με σφυριά, καλέμια και λυχνάρια για φως. Ο Ευπαλίνος τις κατεύθυνε με απλά όργανα μέτρησης και με γεωμετρία, και οι δύο ομάδες συναντήθηκαν μέσα στο βουνό σχεδόν ακριβώς. Δίπλα στον διάδρομο υπάρχει ένα πιο βαθύ αυλάκι για τους σωλήνες του νερού. Γίνεται όλο και πιο βαθύ προς τον νότο, για να κυλά το νερό μόνο του προς τα κάτω. Το όρυγμα έφερνε νερό για περίπου 1.100 χρόνια. Ο ιστορικός Ηρόδοτος το λογάριαζε ένα από τα τρία μεγαλύτερα έργα των Ελλήνων. Μέσα είναι στενό, δροσερό και υγρό, και με απόφαση του Υπουργείου τα παιδιά κάτω από 14 ετών δεν μπαίνουν. Γι’ αυτό το γνωρίζουμε μέσα από την ιστορία του.

The Tunnel of Eupalinos — An ancient water tunnel, dug from both ends at once
In the 6th century BC, the city of ancient Samos needed clean water. The spring was on the other side of a mountain, so the Samians decided to dig a passage right through the mountain. The engineer was Eupalinos, son of Naustrophos, from the city of Megara. The tunnel is 1,036 metres long, a little over a kilometre, and in most places about 1.80 metres high and wide. Two teams of stonemasons dug at the same time, one from the north and one from the south, with only hammers, chisels and oil lamps for light. Eupalinos aimed them with simple measuring tools and with geometry, and the two teams met inside the mountain almost exactly. Beside the passage runs a deeper trench for the water pipes. It gets deeper and deeper towards the south, so that the water flowed downhill on its own. The tunnel carried water for about 1,100 years. The historian Herodotus counted it among the three greatest works of the Greeks. Inside it is narrow, cool and damp, and by a decision of the Ministry children under 14 may not go in. That is why we get to know it through its story.
