Στα στενά της παλιάς πόλης υψώνεται ένας λεπτός, ψηλός μιναρές, ο ψηλότερος του Ρεθύμνου. Δίπλα του στέκεται ένα κτίριο με τρεις τρούλους. Η ιστορία του έχει τρία κεφάλαια. Πρώτα ήταν η εκκλησία της Παναγίας των Βενετών. Όταν ήρθαν οι Οθωμανοί, έγινε τζαμί και απέκτησε τον μιναρέ, από όπου καλούσαν τους πιστούς για προσευχή. Σήμερα είναι ωδείο, δηλαδή σχολή μουσικής, και κάτω από τους τρούλους γίνονται συναυλίες. Οι τρούλοι κάνουν τον ήχο να γυρίζει μαλακά και να γεμίζει τον χώρο. Αν περάσεις απόγευμα, μπορεί να ακούσεις παιδιά να κάνουν πρόβα στο πιάνο ή στο βιολί. Ο μιναρές μπορούσε κάποτε να ανεβαίνει κανείς από μια στενή σκάλα. Από μακριά, ο μιναρές με τον μικρό εξώστη του ξεχωρίζει πάνω από τις στέγες και σε βοηθάει να βρεις τον δρόμο σου στα στενά.

The Neratze — A church, a mosque and today a music school
In the lanes of the old town rises a slim, tall minaret, the tallest in Rethymno. Beside it stands a building with three domes. Its story has three chapters. First it was the Venetian church of Our Lady. When the Ottomans came it became a mosque and gained the minaret, from which the faithful were called to prayer. Today it is a conservatory, that is, a music school, and concerts are held under the domes. The domes make the sound come back softly and fill the room. If you pass in the afternoon, you may hear children practising the piano or the violin. The minaret could once be climbed by a narrow staircase. From a distance, the minaret with its little balcony stands out above the roofs and helps you find your way in the lanes.
