Το παλιό λιμάνι του Ρεθύμνου είναι μικρό και στρογγυλό, σαν αγκαλιά από πέτρα, με τις βάρκες δεμένες στη σειρά και τις ταβέρνες γύρω γύρω. Το έφτιαξαν οι Βενετοί, όταν κυβερνούσαν την Κρήτη, για να φέρνουν και να παίρνουν εμπορεύματα. Είχε όμως ένα πρόβλημα που δεν λύθηκε ποτέ: η θάλασσα έφερνε συνέχεια άμμο και το γέμιζε. Εργάτες το έσκαβαν ξανά και ξανά, αλλά μέσα σε λίγα χρόνια η άμμος γύριζε. Γι’ αυτό ποτέ δεν μπήκαν εκεί μεγάλα πλοία, και σήμερα δένουν μόνο ψαρόβαρκες και μικρά σκάφη. Στην άκρη του κυματοθραύστη στέκεται ένας μικρός πέτρινος φάρος. Το απόγευμα, όταν ανάβουν τα φώτα, το λιμάνι γεμίζει κόσμο. Στην προκυμαία μπορείς να δεις τους ψαράδες να καθαρίζουν τα δίχτυα τους το πρωί, και τους γλάρους να περιμένουν δίπλα τους για κανένα ψαράκι.

The Venetian Harbour — A small harbour that the sand always tried to fill
The old harbour of Rethymno is small and round, like an arm of stone, with the boats tied up in a row and tavernas all around. The Venetians made it when they ruled Crete, to bring goods in and send them out. But it had a problem that was never solved: the sea kept bringing sand and filling it. Workers dug it out again and again, but within a few years the sand came back. That is why big ships never came in, and today only fishing boats and small craft tie up there. At the end of the breakwater stands a small stone lighthouse. In the evening, when the lights come on, the harbour fills with people. On the quay you can watch the fishermen clean their nets in the morning, with seagulls waiting beside them for a little fish.
