Γύρω στο 1200 π.Χ. οι Μυκηναίοι έφτιαξαν στη βορειοανατολική γωνία της ακρόπολης ένα μυστικό πέρασμα, για να έχουν νερό όταν οι εχθροί περικύκλωναν την πόλη. Περνά μέσα και κάτω από το τείχος και κατεβαίνει με σχεδόν εκατό σκαλιά ως μια δεξαμενή σκαμμένη στον βράχο. Το νερό έφτανε εκεί με υπόγειο αγωγό, κυρίως από την πηγή Περσεία, λίγες εκατοντάδες μέτρα μακριά και πιο ψηλά από την κορυφή της ακρόπολης. Το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού γράφει ότι η πηγή τρέχει ακόμα και δίνει νερό στο σημερινό χωριό. Ο αρχαίος ταξιδιώτης Παυσανίας άκουσε δύο ιστορίες για τον Περσέα και το όνομα της πόλης. Στη μία, εκεί έπεσε το κάλυμμα από τη θήκη του σπαθιού του ήρωα Περσέα, που λεγόταν «μύκης». Στην άλλη, ο Περσέας διψούσε και μάζεψε από το χώμα ένα μανιτάρι, που κι αυτό λέγεται «μύκης». Από κάτω του έτρεξε νερό, και ο Περσέας, χαρούμενος, ονόμασε τον τόπο Μυκήνες. Η είσοδος του περάσματος είναι περίπου 60 μέτρα ανατολικά από τη Βόρεια Πύλη.

The Underground Cistern — A secret passage that goes down in the dark to the water
Around 1200 BC the Mycenaeans built a secret passage in the north-east corner of the citadel, so they would have water when enemies surrounded the town. It runs through and under the wall and goes down almost a hundred steps to a cistern cut into the rock. The water reached it through an underground pipe, mostly from the Perseia spring, a few hundred metres away and higher than the top of the citadel. The Ministry of Culture writes that the spring still flows and gives water to the modern village. The ancient traveller Pausanias heard two stories about Perseus and the town’s name. In one, the cap of the hero Perseus’s sword sheath fell there, and it was called a “mykes”. In the other, Perseus was thirsty and picked up a mushroom from the ground, which is also called a “mykes”. Water ran out from under it, and Perseus, full of joy, named the place Mycenae. The way into the passage is about 60 metres east of the North Gate.
