Μέσα στη θάλασσα, δίπλα στην ακτή της Λακωνίας, υψώνεται ένας τεράστιος βράχος από ασβεστόλιθο, μακρύς σχεδόν ενάμισι χιλιόμετρο. Στα αρχαία χρόνια ήταν ένα ακρωτήρι που το έλεγαν Μινώα. Πολλοί λένε ότι το 375 μ.Χ. ένας δυνατός σεισμός τον χώρισε από τη στεριά. Σήμερα τον ενώνουν με την ακτή μόνο μια στενή λωρίδα γης και μια μικρή γέφυρα. Από εκεί βγαίνει και το όνομά του: «μόνη έμβασις», δηλαδή «μία μόνο είσοδος». Τον 6ο αιώνα άνθρωποι από τη Λακωνία ανέβηκαν στον βράχο για να είναι ασφαλείς και έχτισαν μια πόλη. Το πιο παράξενο είναι ότι από τη στεριά δεν βλέπεις ούτε ένα σπίτι της παλιάς πόλης. Η Κάτω Πόλη είναι χτισμένη στην άλλη πλευρά, αυτή που κοιτάζει τη θάλασσα, και τη βλέπεις μόνο όταν περάσεις την πύλη. Στο επίπεδο πλάτωμα της κορυφής βρίσκονται τα ερείπια της Πάνω Πόλης. Στην Κάτω Πόλη μένουν ακόμα άνθρωποι, αλλά μέσα στα τείχη της δεν μπαίνουν αυτοκίνητα.

The Rock — A huge rock in the sea with only one way in
Out in the sea, beside the coast of Laconia, rises a huge limestone rock almost one and a half kilometres long. In ancient times it was a headland called Minoa. Many people say that in the year 375 a strong earthquake cut it off from the mainland. Today only a narrow strip of land and a small bridge join it to the coast. That is where its name comes from: “moni emvasis”, which means “only one way in”. In the 6th century people from Laconia climbed onto the rock to be safe and built a town. The strangest thing is that from the mainland you cannot see a single house of the old town. The Lower Town is built on the other side, the one that faces the sea, and you only see it once you pass through the gate. On the flat top of the rock lie the ruins of the Upper Town. People still live in the Lower Town, but no cars are allowed inside its walls.
