Για πάνω από εκατό χρόνια, η Καβάλα ζούσε από ένα φυτό: τον καπνό. Στα χωράφια γύρω από την πόλη καλλιεργούσαν τον μπασμά, έναν φημισμένο καπνό, και από το λιμάνι της τα φύλλα ταξίδευαν σε όλο τον κόσμο. Γι’ αυτό την έλεγαν «Μέκκα του καπνού». Σήμερα ξέρουμε ότι το τσιγάρο βλάπτει σοβαρά την υγεία. Το Μουσείο Καπνού, στο κέντρο της πόλης, λέει όμως κυρίως την ιστορία της δουλειάς: πώς τα φύλλα περνούσαν από χέρι σε χέρι, από το χωράφι ως το καράβι. Θα δεις μακριές βελόνες με τις οποίες περνούσαν τα φύλλα σε κλωστές για να στεγνώσουν, μεγάλες πλάστιγγες, κόσκινα που τίναζαν τη σκόνη και το χώμα από τα φύλλα, και μια μέγγενη που έσφιγγε τα δέματα πριν φύγουν. Παλιές φωτογραφίες δείχνουν τους εργάτες και τις εργάτριες στις καπναποθήκες, Έλληνες, Τούρκους, Εβραίους και Αρμένιους, δίπλα δίπλα. Το μουσείο ξεκίνησε το 1996 ως μια έκθεση, και την άνοιξη και το καλοκαίρι τα παιδιά μπορούν να δοκιμάσουν μόνα τους πώς ετοίμαζαν τα φύλλα.

The Tobacco Museum — A museum about the leaves that made Kavala rich
For more than a hundred years, Kavala lived from one plant: tobacco. In the fields around the town farmers grew basma, a famous tobacco, and from its harbour the leaves travelled all over the world. That is why Kavala was called the “Mecca of tobacco”. Today we know that cigarettes seriously harm health. But the Tobacco Museum, in the town centre, mostly tells the story of the work: how the leaves passed from hand to hand, from the field to the ship. You will see long needles used to thread the leaves onto strings to dry, big platform scales, sieves that shook the dust and soil out of the leaves, and a vise that squeezed the bales before they left. Old photographs show the men and women who worked in the tobacco warehouses, Greeks, Turks, Jews and Armenians, side by side. The museum began in 1996 as an exhibition, and in spring and summer children can try for themselves how the leaves were prepared.
