Στα πόδια της παλιάς πόλης, στη δυτική πλευρά της χερσονήσου, απλώνεται το λιμάνι της Καβάλας, που λέγεται «Απόστολος Παύλος». Εδώ έδεναν τα καράβια τους οι άνθρωποι της Θάσου ήδη από τον 7ο αιώνα π.Χ., όταν ίδρυσαν τη Νεάπολη. Το αρχαίο λιμάνι σήμερα δεν φαίνεται, γιατί θάφτηκε κάτω από τις επιχωματώσεις· η παλιά ακτή έφτανε ως εκεί που είναι σήμερα η εκκλησία του Αγίου Νικολάου. Γύρω στο 50 μ.Χ. ο Απόστολος Παύλος έφτασε εδώ με πλοίο, στο πρώτο του ταξίδι στην Ευρώπη, και από εδώ συνέχισε για τους Φιλίππους. Αργότερα από αυτό το λιμάνι έφευγαν σιτάρι, βαμβάκι, μέλι και ξυλεία, και ύστερα ο καπνός της Καβάλας για όλο τον κόσμο. Το σημερινό τεχνητό λιμάνι άρχισε να χτίζεται το 1929 και τελείωσε γύρω στο 1950. Σήμερα δένουν εδώ τα φεριμπότ για τη Θάσο και για νησιά του Αιγαίου, κρουαζιερόπλοια και ψαρόβαρκες. Περπάτα νωρίς το πρωί στην προκυμαία: θα δεις ψαράδες να μαζεύουν τα δίχτυα τους και γλάρους να περιμένουν δίπλα τους.

The Harbour — The harbour where the Apostle Paul came ashore
At the foot of the old town, on the west side of the peninsula, lies the harbour of Kavala, which is named “Apostolos Pavlos”, the Apostle Paul. People from Thasos tied up their ships here as early as the 7th century BC, when they founded Neapolis. The ancient harbour cannot be seen today, because it was buried under land that was later filled in; the old shoreline reached as far as where the church of Agios Nikolaos stands today. Around AD 50 the Apostle Paul arrived here by ship, on his first journey to Europe, and from here he went on to Philippi. Later, wheat, cotton, honey and timber left from this harbour, and after them Kavala’s tobacco, bound for the whole world. Work on today’s man-made harbour began in 1929 and was finished around 1950. Today ferries to Thasos and to Aegean islands tie up here, along with cruise ships and fishing boats. Walk along the quay early in the morning: you will see fishermen gathering their nets and seagulls waiting beside them.
