The Grove of the Poets — A wood inside the town, with poets among the trees
A few minutes from the centre, a hill is covered with pines and paths. It is the town’s grove, and people here use it as others use a neighbourhood park: for walking, running, cycling and playing. Among the trees, though, there is something unusual: rows of busts of poets and writers, most of them from Epirus. Each has its name carved on it, and some have lines of verse as well. You can walk from one to the next as if strolling through an anthology. In summer the shade of the pines keeps the grove cool, and from its edges you see the lake below and the mountains opposite. Some children make a game of finding the poet who wrote a poem from their school book, and usually they find him somewhere among the pines.
