🏰 Κούλες (The Koules Fortress) — Ένα φρούριο μέσα στη θάλασσα, με τοίχους εννιά μέτρων

Στην είσοδο του παλιού λιμανιού στέκεται ένα τετράγωνο φρούριο χτισμένο μέσα στο νερό. Οι Βενετοί το έχτισαν ανάμεσα στο 1523 και το 1540 και το ονόμασαν Ρόκα α Μάρε, «ο βράχος στη θάλασσα». Οι Τούρκοι αργότερα το είπαν Κούλες, που θα πει πύργος, και αυτό το όνομα έμεινε. Κοίτα το πάχος των τοίχων του: προς τη μεριά της θάλασσας φτάνουν σχεδόν τα εννιά μέτρα, ενώ προς τη στεριά είναι πολύ λεπτότεροι. Ο λόγος είναι απλός και έξυπνος: οι μπάλες των κανονιών έρχονταν από τα καράβια, όχι από την πόλη. Στο ισόγειο υπάρχουν είκοσι έξι θολωτοί χώροι, όπου φυλάγονταν μπαρούτι, τρόφιμα και νερό. Στους εξωτερικούς τοίχους είναι σκαλισμένο τρεις φορές το φτερωτό λιοντάρι της Βενετίας, το σήμα της πόλης που το έχτισε.

The Koules Fortress — A fortress standing in the sea, with walls nine metres thick
At the mouth of the old harbour stands a square fortress built out in the water. The Venetians raised it between 1523 and 1540 and called it Rocca a Mare, "the rock in the sea". The Turks later called it Koules, meaning tower, and that is the name that stuck. Look at the thickness of its walls: on the sea side they reach almost nine metres, while on the landward side they are much thinner. The reason is simple and clever: cannonballs came from ships, not from the town. On the ground floor there are twenty-six vaulted rooms where gunpowder, food and water were kept. Carved three times on the outside walls is the winged lion of Venice, the badge of the city that built it.
