Ανάμεσα στην παλιά πόλη και στο Παλαιό Φρούριο απλώνεται μια τεράστια ανοιχτή πλατεία, η Σπιανάδα, από τις μεγαλύτερες της Ελλάδας. Αρχικά ήταν άδειος χώρος, επίτηδες: οι Βενετοί δεν άφηναν να χτιστεί τίποτα μπροστά στο φρούριο, για να βλέπουν οι φρουροί όποιον πλησίαζε. Αργότερα έγινε ο κήπος της πόλης. Στη μία πλευρά της οι Γάλλοι, που κυβέρνησαν για λίγα χρόνια το νησί, έχτισαν το Λιστόν: μια σειρά από σπίτια με καμάρες στο ισόγειο, όπου σήμερα οι άνθρωποι κάθονται στα καφέ. Οι Άγγλοι, που ήρθαν μετά, έφεραν ένα παιχνίδι που δεν έχει σχεδόν κανένα άλλο μέρος της Ελλάδας: το κρίκετ. Παίζεται ακόμα εδώ, στο γρασίδι της Σπιανάδας, με ομάδες της πόλης, άσπρες στολές και ένα μπαστούνι σαν πλατύ κουπί, κάτι που τραβάει τα βλέμματα.

The Spianada and the Liston — One of the country’s biggest squares, where cricket is still played
Between the old town and the Old Fortress spreads an enormous open square, the Spianada, one of the largest in Greece. At first it was empty ground, on purpose: the Venetians let nothing be built in front of the fortress, so that the guards could see anyone coming. Later it became the town’s garden. On one side the French, who ruled the island for a few years, built the Liston: a row of houses with arches on the ground floor, where people now sit in cafés. The British, who came next, brought a game that almost nowhere else in Greece has: cricket. It is still played here, on the grass of the Spianada, by town teams in white kit with a bat like a flat oar.
