Στη δυτική πλευρά της παλιάς πόλης, πάνω από το λιμάνι, υψώνεται ένα δεύτερο φρούριο. Το λένε «νέο», αν και χτίστηκε πριν από πάνω από τετρακόσια χρόνια, γιατί είναι νεότερο από το Παλαιό. Οι Βενετοί το έχτισαν όταν κατάλαβαν ότι ένα φρούριο μόνο δεν έφτανε για να προστατεύσει την πόλη που μεγάλωνε. Στις πύλες του θα δεις σκαλισμένο το σύμβολο της Βενετίας: ένα λιοντάρι με φτερά που κρατάει ένα ανοιχτό βιβλίο. Το εσωτερικό είναι γεμάτο στοές, σκοτεινούς διαδρόμους και σκάλες που κατεβαίνουν μέσα στον βράχο, όπου οι στρατιώτες κινούνταν χωρίς να τους βλέπουν από έξω. Αν ανέβεις ως την κορυφή, βλέπεις από τη μία πλευρά τα καράβια στο λιμάνι και από την άλλη τις κόκκινες στέγες της πόλης με το Παλαιό Φρούριο στο βάθος.

The New Fortress — Tunnels, passages and winged lions above the harbour
On the western side of the old town, above the harbour, rises a second fortress. It is called "new", although it was built more than four hundred years ago, because it is younger than the Old one. The Venetians built it when they realised that one fortress alone was not enough to protect a growing town. On its gates you will see the symbol of Venice carved: a lion with wings holding an open book. The inside is full of passages, dark corridors and stairs going down into the rock, where soldiers could move without being seen from outside. If you climb to the top, you see the ships in the harbour on one side and on the other the red roofs of the town with the Old Fortress in the distance.
