Δίπλα στο φρούριο Φιρκά, στη δυτική άκρη του λιμανιού, υπάρχει μια πέτρινη εκκλησία που την έχτισαν οι Βενετοί μοναχοί και την αφιέρωσαν στον Σωτήρα. Όπως και άλλες εκκλησίες της πόλης, οι Οθωμανοί τη μετέτρεψαν σε τζαμί, και αργότερα έγινε αποθήκη. Σήμερα φιλοξενεί τη βυζαντινή συλλογή των Χανίων, με αντικείμενα από τα χίλια περίπου χρόνια που η Κρήτη ανήκε στο Βυζάντιο και από τους αιώνες μετά. Θα δεις εικόνες ζωγραφισμένες πάνω σε ξύλο με χρυσό φόντο, κομμάτια από ψηφιδωτό πάτωμα μιας παλιοχριστιανικής εκκλησίας, νομίσματα, δαχτυλίδια και κοσμήματα. Το μουσείο είναι μικρό και ήσυχο, και το ίδιο το κτίριο, με τις πέτρινες καμάρες του, είναι ένα από τα εκθέματα. The Byzantine Museum — Icons and mosaics inside a church that changed three times
Beside Firka fortress, at the western end of the harbour, there is a stone church that Venetian monks built and dedicated to the Saviour. Like other churches of the town, the Ottomans turned it into a mosque, and later it became a storehouse. Today it holds the Byzantine collection of Chania, with objects from the roughly thousand years when Crete belonged to Byzantium and from the centuries after. You will see icons painted on wood with a gold background, pieces of the mosaic floor of an early Christian church, coins, rings and jewellery. The museum is small and quiet, and the building itself, with its stone arches, is one of the exhibits. Look at the walls: in places you can see where the stone changed each time the building changed use.
