Οι Αέρηδες είναι ένας οκτάγωνος μαρμάρινος πύργος, φτιαγμένος πριν από περίπου δύο χιλιάδες χρόνια από τον αστρονόμο Ανδρόνικο. Κάθε μία από τις οκτώ πλευρές του κοιτάζει προς μια κατεύθυνση, και σε κάθε πλευρά είναι σκαλισμένος ένας άνεμος σαν άνθρωπος που πετάει: ο βοριάς κρατάει κοχύλι για να φυσάει, ο ζέφυρος σκορπίζει λουλούδια από την αγκαλιά του. Κάτω από κάθε ανάγλυφο υπήρχε ένα ηλιακό ρολόι. Ώσπου εδώ δεν υπάρχει τίποτα μαγικό: αν έχει ήλιο, η σκιά σου λέει την ώρα. Το έξυπνο είναι τι γινόταν όταν συννέφιαζε. Μέσα στον πύργο δούλευε ένα ρολόι νερού, που τροφοδοτούνταν από μια πηγή της Ακρόπολης: το νερό έσταζε με σταθερό ρυθμό και μετρούσε τις ώρες ακόμα και με βροχή, ακόμα και τη νύχτα. Στην κορυφή γύριζε ένας χάλκινος ανεμοδείκτης, για να ξέρεις και ποιος άνεμος φυσάει.

The Tower of the Winds — A clock, a compass and a weather station in one building
The Tower of the Winds is an eight-sided marble tower built about two thousand years ago by an astronomer called Andronikos. Each of its eight sides faces one direction, and on every side a wind is carved as a flying man: the north wind holds a shell to blow through, the west wind scatters flowers from the fold of his cloak. Under each carving there was a sundial. So far there is nothing magic about it: if the sun is out, a shadow tells you the time. The clever part is what happened when clouds came over. Inside the tower a water clock ran, fed by a spring on the Acropolis. Water dripped at a steady rate and counted the hours through rain and through the night. On the roof a bronze weather vane turned, so you also knew which wind was blowing.
