Οι Αθηναίοι το λένε Καλλιμάρμαρο, που θα πει «ωραίο μάρμαρο», και το όνομα δεν είναι υπερβολή: τα καθίσματα, οι διάδρομοι, οι σκάλες, όλα είναι μάρμαρο. Είναι το μόνο στάδιο στον κόσμο φτιαγμένο εξ ολοκλήρου από αυτό. Στη θέση του υπήρχε στάδιο ήδη από το 330 π.Χ., για τους αγώνες των Παναθηναίων, και γύρω στο 144 μ.Χ. ο Ηρώδης ο Αττικός το ξανάχτισε στα μάρμαρα. Μετά ερήμωσε, γέμισε χώμα και ξεχάστηκε. Το ξέθαψαν τον 19ο αιώνα και το ξαναέφτιαξαν για τους πρώτους σύγχρονους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του 1896. Χωράει περίπου πενήντα χιλιάδες θεατές. Έχει σχήμα πέταλο, και οι στροφές του είναι τόσο κλειστές που οι δρομείς του 1896 παραπονέθηκαν ότι έχαναν ταχύτητα σε κάθε γύρο. Εδώ τερμάτισε ο Σπύρος Λούης κερδίζοντας τον πρώτο σύγχρονο Μαραθώνιο, μπροστά σε ένα στάδιο που ούρλιαζε.

The Panathenaic Stadium — The only stadium in the world made entirely of marble
Athenians call it Kallimarmaro, which means "beautiful marble", and the name is not an exaggeration: the seats, the walkways, the stairs are all marble. It is the only stadium in the world built entirely from it. A stadium stood on this spot as early as 330 BC for the Panathenaic games, and around AD 144 Herodes Atticus rebuilt it in marble. Then it emptied, filled with soil and was forgotten. It was dug out in the 19th century and rebuilt for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It holds about fifty thousand spectators. It is shaped like a horseshoe, and its bends are so tight that runners in 1896 complained they lost speed on every lap. This is where Spyridon Louis finished first in the first modern marathon, in front of a stadium that was screaming.
