Η Ακρόπολη είναι ένας βράχος 156 μέτρα πάνω από τη θάλασσα, με κορυφή σχεδόν επίπεδη. Οι πρώτοι άνθρωποι ανέβηκαν εκεί πριν από περισσότερα από τρεις χιλιάδες χρόνια, και δεν το έκαναν για τη θέα. Ο βράχος φυλαγόταν εύκολα, είχε δική του πηγή νερού, και από ψηλά έβλεπες όποιον ερχόταν από πολύ μακριά. Αργότερα οι Αθηναίοι σταμάτησαν να μένουν εκεί και άφησαν ολόκληρο τον βράχο στη θεά Αθηνά. Το 480 π.Χ. οι Πέρσες έκαψαν ό,τι υπήρχε πάνω του. Οι Αθηναίοι δεν πέταξαν τα σπασμένα αγάλματα: τα έθαψαν προσεκτικά μέσα στον ίδιο τον βράχο και ξαναέχτισαν από την αρχή. Χάρη σε αυτό, οι αρχαιολόγοι τα βρήκαν δυόμισι χιλιάδες χρόνια αργότερα, με λίγο από το χρώμα τους ακόμα πάνω. Σήμερα η Ακρόπολη είναι ένα εργοτάξιο που δεν κλείνει ποτέ: γερανοί ανεβάζουν μάρμαρο από την Πεντέλη, το ίδιο βουνό που το έδωσε και την πρώτη φορά.

The Acropolis — The rock that has held the city for three thousand years
The Acropolis is a rock 156 metres above the sea with an almost flat top. People first climbed up to live there more than three thousand years ago, and they did not do it for the view. The rock was easy to defend, it had a spring of its own, and from up there you could see anyone coming from a long way off. Later the Athenians stopped living on it and gave the whole rock to the goddess Athena. In 480 BC a Persian army burned everything standing on it. The Athenians did not throw the broken statues away: they buried them carefully inside the rock itself and started building again. Because of that, archaeologists found them two and a half thousand years later with some of their paint still on. Today the Acropolis is a building site that never closes, with cranes lifting marble from Mount Penteli, the same mountain that supplied it the first time.
