Ανάμεσα σε δύο συνηθισμένα κτίρια, σε έναν πολυσύχναστο δρόμο, κρύβεται μια εκκλησία τόσο στενή που εύκολα την προσπερνάς: μόλις οκτώ μέτρα φάρδος και είκοσι δύο μήκος. Μέσα όμως δεν υπάρχει ούτε ένα εκατοστό χωρίς στολίδι: χρυσά αγγελάκια, στριφτές κολόνες, ζωγραφισμένα ταβάνια, μάρμαρα σε ροζ και πράσινο, και κρυφά παράθυρα που ρίχνουν φως εκεί που δεν το περιμένεις. Την έχτισαν στα χρόνια 1733 ως 1746 δύο αδέρφια, ο Κόσμας και ο Έγκιντ Άζαμ, ο ένας ζωγράφος και ο άλλος γλύπτης. Το παράξενο είναι ότι δεν τους την παρήγγειλε κανείς: την έχτισαν μόνοι τους, με δικά τους χρήματα, δίπλα στο σπίτι τους, για δική τους χρήση. Ο ένας μάλιστα είχε φτιάξει ένα παράθυρο στο σπίτι του από όπου έβλεπε τον βωμό. Οι γείτονες όμως διαμαρτυρήθηκαν, και στο τέλος τα αδέρφια την άνοιξαν για όλους.

The Asam Church — Two brothers built a church for themselves, next to their house
Between two ordinary buildings, on a busy street, hides a church so narrow that you easily walk past it: just eight metres wide and twenty-two long. Inside, though, there is not one centimetre without decoration: golden cherubs, twisted columns, painted ceilings, marble in pink and green, and hidden windows that throw light where you do not expect it. It was built between 1733 and 1746 by two brothers, Cosmas and Egid Asam, one a painter and the other a sculptor. The strange thing is that nobody ordered it from them: they built it themselves, with their own money, next to their house, for their own use. One of them even made a window in his house from which he could see the altar. But the neighbours complained, and in the end the brothers opened it to everyone.
