The Nikolaiviertel — The city’s oldest corner, rebuilt only in the 1980s
Around 1230, about eight hundred years ago, merchants and fishermen built the first houses here beside the river Spree, along with a stone church, the Nikolaikirche. At the start there were two small towns, Berlin on this bank and Cölln on the other, which later became one. The war almost wiped the quarter out. In the 1980s East Berlin rebuilt it for the city’s 750th birthday, with narrow lanes and little squares, so that it would look old again. It is worth knowing: many of the “old” houses are really ready-made concrete panels from the 1980s, dressed up to look ancient. Down on the riverbank Saint George, a bronze knight from 1855, is fighting his dragon. And wherever you look a bear is looking back at you: it has been the city’s symbol for centuries, even though the name “Berlin” probably has nothing to do with bears.
