Η αγορά άνοιξε την 1η Οκτωβρίου 1891. Σήμερα έχει φούρνους, τυριά, κρεοπωλεία και μικρή ζυθοποιία, και κάθε Πέμπτη βράδυ γεμίζει μαγείρους που δεν έχουν δικό τους εστιατόριο. Το πιο βερολινέζικο πιάτο, το Currywurst, γεννήθηκε στην πόλη το 1949.

Markthalle Neun — The city’s ninth covered market, saved by its neighbours
The market opened on 1 October 1891. It was the ninth of the covered markets Berlin built to get the stalls off the streets and under a roof, where food could stay cool and clean: there were no fridges then, and fish in the sun was a health problem for a whole neighbourhood. The building, with its iron arches, came through the war. By 2011, though, it had almost emptied and was about to be sold to become another supermarket. Three people from the neighbourhood asked the city to sell it to them instead, and they won. Today it has bakers, cheese, butchers and a small brewery, and every Thursday evening it fills with cooks who have no restaurant of their own. The most Berlin dish of all, Currywurst, was invented in the city in 1949.
