Πριν από περισσότερα από τριακόσια χρόνια το Βερολίνο άνοιξε τις πόρτες του σε χιλιάδες πρόσφυγες από τη Γαλλία, τους Ουγενότους, που στην πατρίδα τους δεν τους άφηναν να προσεύχονται με τον δικό τους τρόπο. Gendarmenmarkt — Two churches like twins, built by people who had to leave home
More than three hundred years ago Berlin opened its doors to thousands of refugees from France, the Huguenots, who at home were not allowed to pray their own way. On the north side of this square they built their own church, and the Germans built theirs facing it. Later King Frederick the Great wanted his square to look like a square in Rome, so he had one architect add a matching domed tower to each church. That is how they became twins without being related. In the middle stands the Konzerthaus, the concert hall designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, which opened in 1821 after the old theatre burned down. In front of it the poet Friedrich Schiller stands in marble, with four marble figures seated round his base. Around 1700, one Berliner in five spoke French: when a city takes strangers in, the city gets richer.
