Μετά τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο το Βερολίνο μοιράστηκε σε τέσσερα κομμάτια, που τα κρατούσαν η Αμερική, η Βρετανία, η Γαλλία και η Σοβιετική Ένωση. Όταν το 1961 σηκώθηκε το Τείχος και έκοψε την πόλη στα δύο, αυτό το μικρό φυλάκιο στη Friedrichstraße έγινε το πιο γνωστό πέρασμα ανάμεσα στο αμερικανικό και στο σοβιετικό κομμάτι. Οι στρατιώτες το είπαν Τσάρλι επειδή έτσι λένε το γράμμα C στο αλφάβητο που χρησιμοποιούν στον ασύρματο: ήταν το τρίτο φυλάκιο, μετά το Άλφα και το Μπράβο. Τον Οκτώβριο του 1961 αμερικανικά και σοβιετικά τανκς στάθηκαν εδώ μούρη με μούρη για δεκαέξι ώρες, ώσπου οι δύο πλευρές τραβήχτηκαν πίσω αργά, ένα τανκ τη φορά. Checkpoint Charlie — The third checkpoint, which is why it is Charlie
After the Second World War, Berlin was split into four parts, held by America, Britain, France and the Soviet Union. When the Wall went up in 1961 and cut the city in two, this little hut on Friedrichstraße became the best known crossing between the American and the Soviet parts. Soldiers called it Charlie because that is how they say the letter C in the alphabet they use on the radio: it was the third checkpoint, after Alpha and Bravo. In October 1961 American and Soviet tanks faced each other here, nose to nose, for sixteen hours, until both sides slowly backed away, one tank at a time. The hut you see today is a copy: the real one was lifted off by crane in 1990 and now stands in a museum out in Dahlem. The street is open to everybody.
