Πριν λέγεται Λυών, η πόλη λεγόταν Λούγκντουνουμ, και ήταν η πρωτεύουσα της ρωμαϊκής Γαλατίας. Ιδρύθηκε το 43 π.Χ. σε αυτόν τον λόφο, και εδώ σκάφτηκε μέσα στην πλαγιά ένα θέατρο, το πιο παλιό ρωμαϊκό θέατρο της Γαλλίας. Δίπλα του υπάρχει ένα δεύτερο, μικρότερο θέατρο, το ωδείο, για μουσική και ποίηση, με χρωματιστά μάρμαρα στο πάτωμα. Για αιώνες τα θέατρα ήταν θαμμένα κάτω από χώμα και αμπέλια, μέχρι που ξεσκεπάστηκαν τον 20ό αιώνα. Το πιο ωραίο είναι ότι το μεγάλο θέατρο δεν είναι μόνο για να το κοιτάς: κάθε καλοκαίρι γίνονται εδώ συναυλίες, με χιλιάδες ανθρώπους στις ίδιες πέτρινες σειρές όπου κάθονταν οι Ρωμαίοι. Το μουσείο δίπλα είναι χωμένο μέσα στον λόφο, για να μην κρύβει τη θέα.

The Roman Theatre — Two thousand years old, and concerts are still held here
Before it was called Lyon, the city was called Lugdunum, and it was the capital of Roman Gaul. It was founded in 43 BC on this hill, and here a theatre was dug into the slope, the oldest Roman theatre in France. It held about ten thousand spectators, seated on semicircular stone rows, with the stage down below. Beside it is a second, smaller theatre, the odeon, for music and poetry, with coloured marble on its floor. For centuries the theatres were buried under earth and vines, until they were uncovered in the 20th century. The best part is that the big theatre is not just for looking at: every summer concerts are held here, with thousands of people on the same stone rows where the Romans sat. The museum next door is tucked into the hill, so as not to block the view.
