Πάνω από τη Λυών, στην κορυφή ενός λόφου, στέκεται μια άσπρη εκκλησία με τέσσερις πύργους στις γωνίες. Φαίνεται από όλη την πόλη, και οι κάτοικοι τη λένε χαϊδευτικά «τον ανάποδο ελέφαντα», γιατί από μακριά οι τέσσερις πύργοι μοιάζουν με πόδια ελέφαντα που κοιτάζουν προς τον ουρανό. Χτίστηκε ανάμεσα στο 1872 και το 1896 με χρήματα που έδωσαν οι ίδιοι οι κάτοικοι, ως ευχαριστώ επειδή η πόλη γλίτωσε από έναν πόλεμο. Μέσα είναι σκεπασμένη με χρυσά ψηφιδωτά, μάρμαρα σε πολλά χρώματα και βιτρό. Η ίδια η βασιλική είναι στην πραγματικότητα δύο εκκλησίες, η μία πάνω στην άλλη: μια φωτεινή επάνω και μια σκοτεινή, χαμηλή από κάτω. Για να ανέβεις παίρνεις ένα μικρό τρένο με σχοινιά που σκαρφαλώνει τον λόφο, το «φικισέλ». Κάθε 8 Δεκεμβρίου η πόλη βάζει μικρά κεριά σε όλα τα παράθυρα, μια γιορτή που ξεκίνησε από αυτόν τον λόφο.

The Basilica of Fourvière — A white church on the hill that locals call "the upside-down elephant"
Above Lyon, on the top of a hill, stands a white church with four towers at its corners. It can be seen from all over the city, and locals fondly call it "the upside-down elephant", because from a distance the four towers look like an elephant’s legs pointing at the sky. It was built between 1872 and 1896 with money given by the citizens themselves, as a thank-you because the city had been spared from a war. Inside it is covered in golden mosaics, marble in many colours and stained glass. The basilica is really two churches, one on top of the other: a bright one above and a dark, low one beneath. To get up you take a little cable railway that climbs the hill, the "ficelle". Every 8 December the city puts small candles in all its windows, a festival that began on this hill.
