Rovaniemi Railway Station — Where the night trains from the south pull in
Many visitors reach Lapland on a night train, and this is where it pulls in. VR, the Finnish railway company, calls its double-decker night train the Santa Claus Express. It runs from Helsinki or Turku in the south, with seats or sleeper cabins and a restaurant car, so you can fall asleep in the south and wake up in the north. Rovaniemi is not the end of the line: some trains go on further, to Kemijärvi. The railway first reached Rovaniemi in 1909. This station building is from the early 1950s, when the town was being built again after the war. Outside, look for the sign with the green VR logo and the word Rautatieasema, Finnish for “railway station”. On the tracks you may see green-and-white carriages; one says Ravintolavaunu, which means “restaurant car”. Always stay well back from the platform edge. Rovaniemi lies in the reindeer herding area, and the herders warn that in the dark months reindeer often wander onto the roads. Over Christmas the trains run to special timetables. In October 2026 VR had not yet published them, so check before you go.
