Τα διάλεξαν με το μυαλό σε όσους αγαπούν τα φυτά του σπιτιού: σχεδόν κάθε πράσινο φυτό που μπήκε σε φινλανδικό σπίτι τα τελευταία εκατό χρόνια είναι εδώ. The Winter Garden — A glasshouse from 1893, warm and green all year round
Beside the Olympic Stadium, at the north end of a small bay, stands a greenhouse with white frames and glass everywhere. It is the Winter Garden (Talvipuutarha). It opened to the public in 1893. The City of Helsinki looks after it. Inside, in three rooms, the Cactus Room, the Palm Room and the Western Wing, grow more than 200 different plants. They were chosen with houseplant lovers in mind: almost every green plant that has lived in a Finnish home over the last hundred years is here. The oldest is a camellia, a tree more than 130 years old, which came here in 1907 from a villa in the city. Carp swim in the fountain pool, and meat-eating plants grow in a glass case. On the back wall of the Palm Room there is a painting from 1893, which came to light again in a 1970s renovation. In the Cactus Room, the big agaves sometimes send up flower stalks so tall that they reach out through the hatch in the roof. Do not touch the plants: some are poisonous. In December the camellias and many cacti flower, and the garden is decorated with a big Christmas tree, candles and Christmas elves, which stay until Epiphany. It is closed on some days, including over Christmas, so check before you go.
