The Ateneum — A goddess with two wreaths watches over Finland’s best-known art museum
On the south side of the Central Station’s square stands a big building from 1887. It is the Ateneum, Finland’s best-known art museum, open since 1888. Its name comes from the goddess Athena. High in the middle of the front, in the triangle under the roof, a crowned goddess sits holding out two wreaths. Lower down, four stone caryatids stand in pairs beside a big arched window, and above the entrance three heads look out, one of them the ancient Greek sculptor Phidias. Inside hang paintings every Finn knows. In Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s “Lemminkäinen’s Mother”, a bee brings a healing balm from the gods to bring the hero back to life; the painter’s own mother sat for the mother. In an 1888 painting by Helene Schjerfbeck, a child who has just recovered from an illness sits in a wicker chair and looks at a budding twig in a glass. Van Gogh’s “Street in Auvers-sur-Oise” came here in 1903, and the Ateneum says that made it the first museum in the world to own one of his works. In December, look for a small painting from 1868: a snowy Helsinki street, a horse with a load of hay and a toboggan. Works move and are lent to other museums, so check before you go what is on the walls.
