The Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform — Red roofs, a very tall spire and the sea beyond
On the northern edge of Toompea hill, on Kohtu street, the hill ends suddenly and a viewing platform opens in front of you. It is called Kohtuotsa, which means “the end of Kohtu street”. Stand still and look down. Below you spread the red-tiled roofs of the Lower Town, where the merchants lived and worked. Behind you, up on the hill, are the castle and the churches of the rulers. Now turn to the north-east. There, half a kilometre away, rises a very thin, pointed spire: that is St Olaf’s, the tallest spire you will see in the Old Town. Further off you can see the harbour, the Gulf of Finland and, in the distance, the district of Pirita. The Orthodox church with the onion domes is behind you, to the south-west. In December the sun sets at about twenty past three in the afternoon, and soon after that the town’s lights come on. The roofs may be white with snow, though snow is never certain. Hold a grown-up’s hand tightly, because the platform is at the very edge of the hill.
